Master Myogen Has Died

Hello Monmouth Zen Circle Friends:

I will be coming down to Shrewsbury this weekend so that we can sit and practice together. I apologize for the late notice. I was away from 12.24-1.1 and had no access to the group list. It is the first full weekend in the New Year and I come the first full weekend of each and every month, barring Sandys…

Myogen Steve Stucky, the Abbot of the San Francisco Center died at his home peacefully, lovingly and surrounded by love at about 0710 EST Tuesday, 31 December 2013. He was suffering from Pancreatic Cancer. Let us dedicate our practice this weekend to helping Myogen crossover. Most likely he will help us.

I will tell a Zen story about the whole thing. So will you.

See you Friday evening at 7:30 PM for zazen and some discussion.

See you Saturday from 1000 AM until 5:00 PM.

Bring a bag lunch and something to share.

It is always more intimate to stay together during  our lunch break.

We will resume sitting at 1:15 PM.

We will have Dokusan in the afternoon.

I will give a Dharma Talk and we will share.

You are welcome to all or a portion of our festivities.

Suzuki-roshi on Sewing and Wearing Buddhist Robes and how it Relates to Our Practice

Last Saturday I told you that. whatever religion you belong to, it doesn’t matter when you come to sit with us. That is because our way of sitting, of practice, is for you to become yourself. Katagiri Roshi always says, “to settle oneself on oneself.’ To be yourself. When you become you, yourself at that moment your practice includes everything. Whatever there is. it is a part of you. So you practice with Buddha. you practice with Bodhidharma and you practice with Jesus. You practice with everyone in the future or in past. That, is our practice- But when you do not become yourself, it doesn’t happen in that way.

So if you come here and sit with us, you’re not only sitting with us, but you are also sitting with everything, including animate and inanimate beings. Dogen Zenji said, if your practice doesn’t include everything, that is not real practice.

“If you want to understand buddhas’ miracles, you should study Guishan’s words. As this is no small matter, practicing miracles is studying the buddha way. Not practicing miracles is not studying the buddha way. This miraculous activity is transmitted heir to heir. Do not study miracles from those outside the way, those Two Lesser Vehicles, or interpreters of sutras.

 

When we study Guishan’s miracles we see that they were unsurpassable; each action was extraordinary. Beginning with Guishan lying down, there are: turning to face the wall, getting up, calling Huiji, talking about the dream, washing his face, and sitting up. Yangshan leaned forward to listen, and brought a basin of water and a towel. Guishan then described this as: Huiji and I have been sharing miracles. Study these miracles.

 

These ancestors who authentically transmitted buddha dharma talked in this way. Do not merely interpret it as Guishan expressing his dream by washing his face. Regard their interaction as a series of miracles.

 

Guishan said, This is no small matter. His understanding of miracles is different from that of practitioners who follow the Lesser Vehicles, have limited understanding, or hold small views. It is not the same as that of bodhisattvas of the ten stages and three classes. People of limited views study minor miracles of buddha ancestors.”
